The goal for infielders is to field the baseball on the short hop or long hop (backend of the hop). Errors are more likely when they have to field an in-between hop, where the ball can be more difficult to judge. Infielders need to be adjustable, so they can put themselves in a position to consistently get a good hop. Below are links to help you understand hops, the fielding mechanics that make you more adjustable, and drills to help you develop. Click on the red buttons.
“If you’re not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he’ll be ready to take your job.” – Brooks Robinson
The off-season is the best time for you to work on your fielding. This is when you can make the biggest gains. If you are already doing it with team or private instructor, then great. If not, this program is your road map for becoming a better infielder. Improvement will only happen if you take it seriously and schedule time to train regularly.
“There is no time to fool around when you practice. Every drill must have a purpose. I try to never get away from that. Habits are important.” – Albert Pujols
